The Cap’n and I took years to come to the decision to make aliyah.  We had many of the excuses others have, plus perhaps a few more.  But we also had a strong desire to live here.  It was only after a Kol Nidrei d’var Torah given by a friend that we reframed our thinking.  He defined timhon levav in the liturgy as refraining from doing that which one knows to be right because it is easier to stick to the status quo.  When we heard that, we realized that the time had come to look into aliyah seriously.  The following Yom Kippur, we were in Israel.

I need hardly say that Israel is special.  As I’ve said many times, Israel may not be the only place for Jews to live, but in my opinion, it is by far the best place for them to live.  Israel is by, for, and about the Jews.  Nowhere else is.  It is flawed in many ways, and one of the best ways I can think of to find solutions to those flaws is to have bright, principled, well-educated Western technocrats come and build, develop, and improve the country.

Including four more flights expected in the next two days from Europe, South Africa and North America, the number of new immigrants to Israel this year total 16,300, bringing the number for the decade to 221,000.

Sixty percent of the new Israeli citizens were under the age of 36, and the number of native English speakers moving to Israelis swelled by 17 percent.

Sharansky said the ”red carpet”  policy includes guiding new immigrants from touchdown at the airport through the procedures of opening files with the National Insurance Institute (Bituach Leumi), medical plans and banks.

An entire planeload of 150 immigrants from five South American countries will arrive on Thursday, evidence of the 15-20 percent increase in aliya from the region over past year.

“This is the first time that such a big group is coming together on aliya,” said Silvina Sofna, the Jewish Agency’s Latin American aliya director. The olim are from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru and Uruguay, most aged 25-30, she said.

The plane, which is leaving from Sao Paulo on Tuesday, will be flown by Javier Ruben, an El Al Israel Airways employee born in Argentina who worked in Mexico for two years as a Jewish Agency aliya emissary.

When my mother died, my daughters and my brother said, ‘Come back to the States.’ I said, ‘I can’t do that.’ I can’t leave this country. I have trouble even leaving Jerusalem”.
